Interview

NAME: Bill O’Keefe

NEW JOB TITLE: Minneapolis-based partner and head of strategy, TigerRisk Partners LLC

PREVIOUS POSITION: Minneapolis-based partner, McKinsey & Co.

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: Overall, I remain bullish on the industry despite its challenges. The world is no doubt getting riskier in very meaningful ways – from climate change to geopolitical instability to the changing nature of risk as the economy and society are transformed by technology. And, of course, the global pandemic has certainly increased the entire world’s awareness of risk and the implications of catastrophic events. The industry can and should play a leading role addressing these risks. However, I also think the industry is in the midst of significant disruption. The need to win the war for talent, along with adopting a more nimble operating model and a culture of innovation and agility, has never been higher.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: At Tiger Risk, our mission is to be the world’s leading provider of risk, capital and strategic advice to the insurance industry. My goals are to help Tiger uncover new, large growth opportunities to accelerate our own growth – while also working with our clients to continue building out our market-leading strategic advisory capabilities. I think we can play a huge role in helping our clients navigate the rapidly changing market, and finding organic and inorganic opportunities for profitable growth while also optimizing their use of capital to achieve this growth.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY:

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET:

ADVICE: Work hard, be curious, be genuine, be humble, act with integrity every day, and try to make deep and lasting friendships with people from across the industry. At the end of the day, this is still a relationship business and investing in personal relationships will be rewarded over the course of your career.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: I’d love to be the general manager of a Major League Baseball team if forced to leave the industry.

COLLEGE MAJOR: Irish literature and U.S. history. Eventually, I went to get my MBA so I could learn things a bit more relevant to the business world.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: I am looking forward to working with a talented, innovative group of colleagues deeply committed to developing distinctive solutions for our clients. I’m also excited to join Tiger at a key moment in our history – we are now big enough to matter in the market, while still being small enough to be nimble as we pursue growth opportunities and build new capabilities to serve our clients.

FAVOURITE MEAL: Ribeye steak

BOOK: Nonfiction: “Team of Rivals,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Fiction: “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.”

HOBBIES: I have three young children, so I don’t have much time for hobbies when I get home from work. However, when I do have free time, I enjoy golfing and downhill skiing. Having a love of outdoor activities has been a benefit during the COVID-19 crisis.

TV SHOW: Anything sports-related.

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Spend time with my wife and kids, ideally on a golf course or ski slope.
