Interview

NAME: Garrett Hanrahan

NEW JOB TITLE: Dallas-based global head of aviation, Marsh JLT Specialty

PREVIOUS POSITION: Dallas-based U.S. aviation leader, Marsh JLT Specialty

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: I remain bullish on the aviation/aerospace sector, even given the present challenges associated with COVID-19. A hallmark of our industry is resiliency, our ability to respond to local and global challenges and the positive and inextricable link we have on the world economy. I consider myself lucky to associate with clients, colleagues and a market who care deeply about professionalism and who provide me hope not only for today, but also tomorrow. At times like any industry, aviation can be down, but it is never out and that’s because of the people.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: Engaging in an impactful and meaningful way with my colleagues; adapting proactively to challenges; producing results for clients, colleagues and our community; and being flexible, while maintaining a positive attitude and driving unforeseen results.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: COVID-19, its impact and the recovery timeline; climate change; infrastructure challenges around the globe; and a changing market environment. But where there is challenge, there is always opportunity.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: Out of undergraduate studies, I worked for Alexander & Alexander as a risk management associate (graduate training program). I spent two weeks in A&A Aviation during my one-year rotation. It was here that the aviation bug bit me. I spent the next two years working in property/casualty across a spectrum of industry (aviation, health care, banking), always knowing I wanted to ultimately be in aviation when the opportunity arose.

ADVICE: Find an industry sector that you are passionate about. This may sound cliché, however, once you have discovered your passion, you never really go to work and you get to hang out with some incredible friends who make you look really good.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: Would love to teach at the university level.

COLLEGE MAJOR: B.A. in history and B.B.A. in finance, Southern Methodist University; MBA, SMU

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Working with some of the finest minds and professionals in the industry, engaging with clients and colleagues alike who truly care about what they do and the impact they have, and responding to the challenges tomorrow will bring.

FAVOURITE MEAL: A meal at home.

BOOK: “Charlie Wilson’s War,” by George Crile

HOBBIES: Golf and reading (do not get to do the former enough). Being with the family (if this is considered a hobby?).

TV SHOW: “Modern Family”

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Have lunch with my kids and catch up candidly about the week and what’s going on in their world.
