Interview

NAME: Ken Remson

NEW JOB TITLE: Los Angeles-based partner, global insurance services, Goldberg Segalla LLP

PREVIOUS POSITION: Los Angeles-based partner, global insurance services, Goldberg Segalla LLP

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: I think that really depends on the insurance industry’s ability to adapt to changes and challenges it is facing.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: I am excited about working with the great people at Goldberg Segalla to provide the insurance industry with quality legal services and advice and to help grow the firm’s practice.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: For some time, I have felt that the evolving increasing use of information technology provides a serious challenge to the industry. Virtually everyone’s sensitive information (e.g., medical, banking, credit, etc.) is online where it can be difficult to protect. Consequently, there is the potential for significant liabilities involving thousands, if not millions, of people. Similarly, the evolution of the workplace to include net-driven employers creates new and changing risks. Even more significant changes in all these areas are resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This will provide a very challenging environment for the industry, which will have to change and evolve to provide businesses with the protection they need from these new and constantly changing risks.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: I was a partner at Anderson Kill Olick & Oshinsky in their Palo Alto office representing large corporate policyholders. The majority of my practice was representing utility companies that had environmental liabilities arising from historic operations of manufactured gas plants in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

ADVICE: Maintain your credibility and honesty at all costs. Sometimes you have to tell your clients or your employers things they do not want to hear.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: I actually already had my dream job. I was a television reporter and anchor at KGMB TV, the CBS affiliate in Honolulu.

COLLEGE MAJOR: I was a civil engineering major until I decided I did not want to give up broadcasting. I changed my last year at Stanford and graduated with a communications degree.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Meeting and working with new clients to help them navigate their way through the ever-changing landscape. While some types of insurance have not changed significantly, there are new products being rolled out by the industry that create new challenges. I enjoy reading new policies and applying them to situations facing my clients. Having a great team to work with makes that even better.

FAVOURITE MEAL: I grew up with East Coast Italian Hoagies. I still love them.

BOOK: I don’t really have one. I enjoy reading books about Hawaii, including books about the history of the islands, the overthrow of the monarchy, etc. I also read books about the crime figures and politicians, many of whom I covered during my years as a reporter in Hawaii.

HOBBIES: I love animals. Unfortunately, I lost my 130-pound Bouvier des Flandres during the pandemic. I also dabble in magic.

TV SHOW: “Married with Children.” It is certainly not politically correct now. I don’t think it was politically correct then.

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: I like to spend time with my wife and son. I like to get outdoors and go to the beach either by my home in Manhattan Beach or in Hawaii when I am able. I also like going to or watching Stanford football games.
