Interview

NAME: King Flynn

NEW JOB TITLE: Las Vegas-based head of insurance, Sayata Labs

PREVIOUS POSITION: Las Vegas-based head of U.S. broker relations, Beazley PLC

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: The industry is undergoing a healthy level of change as wholesalers, retail agents and insurers strive to deliver new products and enhanced services to the end-client while new entrants to the market (insurtechs, for one) look to carve out a niche to deliver new solutions. Cyber is just one component of the industry growing, therefore the outlook is strong across several product sectors provided brokers and insurers continue to listen to the client and learn what risks need a ready solution.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: To take advantage of relationships I have built over 40+ years to fully support the market delivering a best-in-class cyber risk solution.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: There is no shortage of creative ideas when it comes to the development of building a business supporting the cyber marketplace. The key, in part, is identifying which ideas best support all industry players and translating those into a business that delivers to all. This challenge becomes an opportunity quickly, and one I am eager to support.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: Following college graduation in 1975, I started as an entry-level broker with Johnson & Higgins in New York with a focus on marine and energy.

ADVICE: Think of yourself as heading off to college as a freshman and selecting a ‘major.’ It’s important to develop a core competency in a technical discipline. Therefore, picking your ‘major’ is critical in your formative years. Discover a major that intrigues you and then establish yourself as an authority in that discipline through hard work and a healthy dose of patience. While it may take some time to earn those credentials, good things will follow. I have seen too many young professionals strive for what they perceive to be the road to career success without first developing that rock-solid competency in a technical discipline.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: Serve as a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” Perhaps they will create a Sans-Star judge category.

COLLEGE MAJOR: Business/economics

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Over the course of my career, I have stuck to the theory “learn something new every day and you will remain young and energetic.” Needless to say, I am getting younger by the minute in my new role with Sayata.

FAVOURITE MEAL: My dream dining experience would be to design a menu that draws upon some favorite specialties spanning Thai, Italian, French, Asian (across several countries), low country, Cajun and Latin American. Having experienced firsthand the ‘local authentic’ in our far-flung travels, my wife Cindy and I are always thinking of how we would construct the perfect menu combining so many great elements borrowed from each cuisine.

BOOK: “Team of Rivals”

HOBBIES: Golf, walking our three rescue dogs, traveling far and wide with Cindy and taking advantage of our local Las Vegas entertainment. The options are unlimited.

TV SHOW: “Ray Donovan” is up there.

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Discover a new treasure at our favorite eclectic consignment store or test-driving a new restaurant or show in Las Vegas. Our “big little town” (as we affectionately refer to Las Vegas) is the friendliest bunch of folks we have encountered. There is more to Las Vegas than what most travelers envision when they are considering a trip to the Nevada desert.
