Interview

NAME: Rick Weil

NEW JOB TITLE: Chicago-based general manager, U.S. health care industry, Aon PLC

PREVIOUS POSITION: Chicago-based managing director, BDC Advisors

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: The outlook for the U.S. health care industry is strong. Affordability, regulatory changes, better technology, new therapies and the practical use of big data will provide the impetus for more innovation in the delivery of care and require new solutions to support the care delivery ecosystem.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: My goal is to ensure that we are bringing the very best of Aon to each of our clients. I will also identify and bring to market new and better ways Aon can assist our clients as their needs evolve.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: Clinicians and care delivery enterprises are under tremendous pressure to do more with less and shift their model to value-based care instead of predominately fee-for-service. Competition is increasing, and we are seeing significant integration between the financing and delivery of care. As organizations transition, this presents both risks and opportunities. Aon has a broad portfolio of solutions that can help organizations make this transition faster and with less risk to the business.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: I’ve been working in the health care industry for nearly my entire 20-year career. My first was understanding how a large health system could use their patient data to better connect those patients with cutting-edge clinical trials.

ADVICE: The health care industry is massive. I’d encourage newcomers to identify areas that they have personal passion around. Then understand what they can do to improve patients’ lives. At the end of the day, that is what makes this industry special and what keeps us going.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: Professional hockey player

COLLEGE MAJOR: Nuclear engineering

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Working with our clients to help them achieve a more sustainable economic environment from which they can continue to provide the best health care in the world.

FAVOURITE MEAL: Chicago deep-dish pizza

BOOK: “Ender’s Game,” by Orson Scott Card. The book had several twists and turns and is a thought-provoking mix of sci-fi and the human condition.

HOBBIES: Cross training, playing chess and performing repairs around the house

TV SHOW: “Friends”

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Play with my kids and my dogs
