Interview

NAME: Rupert Mackenzie

NEW JOB TITLE: Houston-based energy and power practice leader for the Americas, Marsh

PREVIOUS POSITION: Houston-based energy and power practice leader for the Americas, Marsh

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: I think the outlook for the industry is very positive – we certainly live in interesting times, as there will be much foundational change in the next few years. Everywhere I look (at both brokers and insurers), there is still work to be done to fully realize the benefits and opportunities that technology can deliver for our industry and our clients, but we are making good progress. I am upbeat about the changes that will come and the market efficiencies that technology will generate for our clients’ benefit.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: To continue to implement our global specialty model. We deliver better advice, insight, transactional results and colleague opportunities when we have the same-shared industry experience and focus as our clients. Marsh has an incredibly experienced and talented team supporting clients across the energy, power and renewable industries, and I am looking forward to working with them to continue to build out our expertise and relevance.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: The dynamics of the energy industry are changing rapidly, driven by changing investor appetites, environmental initiatives and technology – it is an interesting time to be serving our clients.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: I started in claims working at an independent Lloyd’s broker that specialized in energy risks. I enjoyed the learning opportunities that claims afforded, but moved subsequently into placement. First, as a casualty broker, and then after about 10 years, I moved across to property placement and then production.

ADVICE: First, never forget that insurance is a people business and establishing meaningful relationships with colleagues, clients and markets is key. Second, I would recommend people find an area of the industry that holds their interest — a focus they can be passionate about throughout their career.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: Farming or writing books would suit me.

COLLEGE MAJOR: Political philosophy

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Well, as we are relocating from the U.K. to Texas, we are all looking forward to settling in to life in Houston. It is a fantastic city, with wonderful people, culture and let’s not forget Texas BBQ!

FAVOURITE MEAL: Steak and a salad

BOOK: There are too many to choose from: In the top 10 would be “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles, “English Pastoral” by James Rebanks and “The Old Ways” by Robert Macfarlane.

HOBBIES: Nowadays it’s mostly time with my wife and children – but I’m a keen skier and hunter and have a passion for motorcycles.

TV SHOW: I never seem to have time for TV.

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Long walks with the family and the dog.
