Interview

NAME: Tandeka T. Nomvete

NEW JOB TITLE: Atlanta-based program director, Spencer Educational Foundation

PREVIOUS POSITION: Atlanta-based college recruiting director, Questpro Consultants

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: I’m very hopeful for the future of this industry and want to see it become a more diverse and inclusive space to work in. I believe that we will one day get to a point where more young people will be choosing to pursue careers in risk management and insurance, as it becomes more attractive to the next generation. The RMI industry has always been stable with abundant career opportunities, and I believe that an influx of younger and more diverse talent will help to shape the industry into a top choice for future college students.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: I hope to create awareness among universities, students, organizations, and companies that might not yet be aware of the Spencer Educational Foundation and our program offerings. We are focused on funding the next generation of RMI leaders. I hope to be able to reach students who have not previously applied for our scholarships, universities that have not yet applied for the Risk Manager on Campus programs, organizations that have not yet applied for our General Grants programs, and risk managers who have not yet applied for our internship grants.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: The imminent talent gap and DEI. For various reasons, we currently do not have enough young talent entering this industry. I believe that the more we focus on the employee experience and making our companies more inclusive, the more we’ll be able to attract and retain talent, especially young talent. These days, young people are asking about company culture during the interview process and researching diversity metrics and statistics before even applying to companies. It’s in our best interest to enhance the employee experience and ensure we’re catering to people from all walks of life.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: My first job in this industry was a summer internship at Marsh and I had a wonderful experience. I was part of a training program and got the chance to collaborate with other Marsh interns from across the country. Having this positive first experience within the industry helped shape my career and solidify my interest in pursuing a career in RMI.

ADVICE:  My advice is to speak up and be seen. Take up space and make your presence known. We want to connect with you, we want to network with you, and we want to find ways to collaborate with you. There are several professional associations and nonprofit organizations within this industry that have volunteer opportunities. Raise your hand and become involved in your local, regional, and national insurance communities. Know that your skills are valued and that there is a perfect spot for you here in this industry.

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: I don’t have one – I can confidently say that I’ve landed a dream job in this industry. I love working on the nonprofit side and enjoy what I do. If I had to pick something, I’d go for the Insta influencers who always seem to be getting paid to travel the world, LOL! Exploring all of the countries in the world would be quite fun.

COLLEGE MAJOR: Major in risk management and insurance, minor in actuarial science

LOOKING FORWARD TO: I’m looking forward to meeting people, creating new connections, and building upon existing relationships. I’m also looking forward to changing the lives and career trajectories of people who are interested in this industry. I’m thrilled to be with an organization that makes their lives a little easier by providing scholarships and creating experiential learning opportunities.

FAVOURITE MEAL: Brunch!

BOOK: “Born a Crime,” by Trevor Noah

HOBBIES: Traveling, scuba diving, snorkeling, and exploring unique restaurants and attractions.
