Audit finds improper Medicare billing by hospitals continues, but is declining

Acute care hospitals generated $39.3 million in improper Medicare Part B payments from 2016 to 2021, but that is a steep drop from previous years as a result of the federal government’s adoption of new tools to root out such payment errors, reports Fierce Healthcare. The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General conducted an audit from 2016 through 2021 because a prior review from 2013 through 2016 unearthed a whopping $51.6 million in overpayment.
