Crawford & Co. profits drop

ATLANTA—Independent claims management provider Crawford & Co. on Monday reported net income for the first quarter of 2009 of $3 million, a 67% drop compared with results in the first quarter of 2008.

Revenue for the Atlanta-based company, which handles property/casualty and workers compensation claims, dropped 9% to $250.3 million in this year’s first quarter compared with the first quarter a year ago.

Crawford’s U.S. property/casualty revenue before reimbursements was $55.1 million for the first quarter, up from $49.5 million during the prior-year quarter. However, its workers compensation segment, Broadspire, reported revenues before reimbursements were $74.6 million in the first quarter of 2009, down from $80.3 million in the first quarter of 2008.

“Though better than expected, our first quarter 2009 operating results are reflective of the current global economic conditions that are negatively impacting nearly every corporation,” said Jeffrey T. Bowman, chief executive officer of Crawford, in a statement.
