Local protests threaten $53 billion mining investments in Peru

Increasing protests by the local communities in Peru over mining activities are threatening around $53 billion worth of mining investments in the country, Reuters reported. Output at Las Bambas copper mine, which produces 2% of the world's copper output, has remained suspended since April due to the protests by local communities, while work at Southern Copper's Cuajone mine was also stalled for almost two months earlier this year due to protests.
