Miner halts refinery after nearby residents show signs of poisoning

Chilean state-owned copper mining company Codelco suspended operations at its Ventanas smelter and refinery in Chile on June 6 after an environmental emergency was declared following signs of poisoning from sulfur dioxide emissions in people from nearby towns, Reuters reported. The country’s environmental regulator ordered provisional measures for Codelco and power utility AES Chile following the incident, with Codelco voluntarily suspending the Ventanas operations for maintenance.
