N.J. bill would require comp insurers to cover medical pot

Employers and their workers compensation insurers in New Jersey would have to cover the costs for medical marijuana under a proposal introduced in the state Senate on Thursday.

S. 3406 states that “an employer or workers ‘ compensation insurance carrier or private passenger automobile insurance carrier shall provide coverage for costs associated with the medical use of cannabis.”

The bill also states that “an employer or carrier shall not be required to provide coverage for costs associated with the medical use of cannabis upon intervention by the federal government to enforce the ‘Controlled Substances Act. ‘”

The bill was referred to the Senate Commerce Committee.
