Norsk Hydro sued in Netherlands over alleged Brazilian river contamination

Lawsuit

Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro ASA has been sued in a Dutch court for allegedly polluting the Brazilian river of Barcarena for around 20 years, causing serious health problems in the nearby communities, Expatica reported citing AFP. The lawsuit, which also names Norsk Hydro’s seven subsidiaries and shareholders, was brought by nine victims and an association representing around 11,000 indigenous families living near Barcarena, and accuses Norsk’s Alunorte plant of discharging toxic sludge in the river.
