Protests cause $50 million damage; state of emergency declared

Ongoing civil unrest in Ecuador against the government’s social and economic policies have caused an estimated $50 million in losses to the country’s production sector, as the protestors damage infrastructure and businesses, Reuters reported. State-owned oil company EP Petroecuador was forced to declare a force majeure on June 18, as the protestors entered oil fields, disrupting production. A state of emergency has been declared in the provinces of Imbabura, Cotopaxi, and Pichincha for 30 days from June 17.
