TPA Crawford subpoenaed by Spitzer

ATLANTA–Crawford & Co. said Friday that it has received a subpoena from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that seeks “various documents” related to the third-party administrator’s operations.

Crawford was the 10th largest TPA in Business Insurance‘s 2004 ranking, based on 2003 revenues of $99.7 million from handling claims for self-insured clients.

Thomas W. Crawford, chief executive officer of the Atlanta-based TPA, said he is reviewing the request and could not provide additional details about the information sought. He added that his company will cooperate with the request.

Last week, Mr. Spitzer subpoenaed TPA Gallagher Bassett Services Inc., which was believed to be the first subpoena his office has served to a claims administration company since the start of his investigation of insurance industry practices.
