According to insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries pose a great risk of igniting fires onboard ships, creating a considerable safety risk, Reinsurance News reported. An AGCS analysis shows that fire or explosion accounted for 18% of the €9.2 billion ($9.16 billion) worth of marine insurance industry claims in the past five years, with Li-ion batteries fitted in electric vehicles or stored incorrectly in cargo being the main cause of fires.
